The Rhythm Authority

Bruno Ravel Bassist for Danger Danger
I
This band takes me back to a time that i loved. I have allways been
extremly passionate about music, First it was Pop all kinds of pop
any pop music i could find, I listened to the tunes, then record the
songs, then play them back and grab my notepad and write down
the lyrics just so i could make sure i knew all the words correctly.
When my brothers used to listen to there rock music i didnt pay
attention being obsessed with this other type of music. But One day
My brother was watching headbangers ball and this band was on
there The guys were so cute and that caught my eye so i stoped
and listened, That was it i was hooked On Rock, then Metal, Now
pretty much anything rock. One of the bands that helped keep my
Mindset on rock music was Danger Danger. I loved everything
about this band. There music was everything to me. And Honestly
Just made me Happy. Songs do that for me, they can cheer me up
and their music still does that for me today. So It was pretty
exciting to get this interview, Its really cool to get insight on where
they are today. So lets see whats going on in his world.
TRA: Huge fan of the band and Ive been aware of all the shifts and changes
to the lineup over the years but the one thing constant has been you
and steve, What do you Think makes that relationship solid what
do you think makes you work so well together musically?
BR: Well, My belief is that our working relationship is solid
because we respect and trust each other.
TRA: what inspires you?
BR: Good one! Well, many other things used to inspire me in the past,
but these days, it’s usually everyday life events that inspire me,
or can also prevent me from feeling inspired!
TRA: what do you think is your favorite song you have ever wrote?
BR: Believe it or not, I don’t really have a favorite… I love them
and hate them all equally!
TRA: What do you think is the difference between music back when
you started compared to now?
BR: Music back then was way more organic. Most artists/bands wrote
and played their own songs and for the most part, had to have
something that separated them from the pack in order to get noticed.
Nowadays, everything is all computer/media driven. Kids think that
if you can sing well, then you can be an artist. There’s so much
more to it that that.
TRA: Who are your influences?
BR: My early influences were My Dad, The Beatles, Kiss, Cheap Trick,
Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, etc, etc. Later, Rick Springfield, Survivor,
Mutt Lange and Adam Schmitt were huge influences.
These days I am more
of a fan of songwriters/producers than artists because artists are so interchangeable…
My Dad is #1 still, and then there’s Max Martin who I consider to be the best
songwriter/producer of the past 30 years.
TRA: What is your gear?
BR:For Bass, I have a ton of basses, but my fave’s are my old P Basses,
and my Spectors. Amps? Well you still can’t beat an old SVT.
TRA: How has life changed touring?
BR: It’s a lot harder because we’re older and don’t have the big crew
we used to have to help us, so we’re basically on our own which sucks,
but if we hired a big crew, we wouldn’t make any money so we have to
sacrifice. We also have to travel abroad much, much more than in the
past and while the fans are great and the shows are spectacular, he
ravel is brutal, but it’s either rough it, or stop touring.
TRA: What are you hobbies?
BR: Don’t really have any “hobbies” per say, but I love to cook, and
relax with my family and friends.
TRA: You dont tour alot with danger danger anymore are you working
on anything else or with anybody else?
BR: I do everything from produce local kids demo’s to mixing/engineering/producing
other bands records. I love to mix, it’s my passion. You can google my credits if
you want to see which bands I’ve worked with. Outside of music, I am very
involved with real estate and my investment properties. It’s a pain, but
unfortunately, music just doesn’t bring in the money it used to.
(Do it people check out his creds i could add a list but better for you to see for
theres alot there)
TRA: DO you have a favorite place to play?
BR: Let’s just say I love to play anywhere where the fans are pumped and loud!
TRA: What is the greatest gift you ever got from a fan?
BR: Their love and admiration… Nothing can top that.
TRA: where was your first show and how did it go?
BR: The first time I ever played a show was in summer camp when I was a teen. We,
of course played cover songs, and I remember that we covered “Firehouse”
by Kiss, and our singer even spit blood like Gene Simmons! Awesome show!
TRA: Anything embarassing ever happen to you while on stage?
BR: Of course! There were a few drunk nights, when I fell down, there were musical flubs
that were totally embarrassing, all that cliched stuff that you hear about. It happens to all of us.
TRA: How do you get the inspiration for your songs?
BR: For me, it’s usually from something that happens to me at that moment. Someone could say
something random to me and it will inspire a lyric, or I could be in my car and listening to the
radio and a certain chord progression is in a commercial I hear, and It sparks me to come
up with a new chord progression. As I said before, life dictates my inspiration. That’s
why smart phones are great. I just stop what I’m doing at the moment, and sing
into my phone, and voila.. a new song perhaps?
TRA: do you think you have a style of playing if so what would that
be?
BR: Not really, but if I had to describe it, I’d say melodic, precise, and aggressive.
TRA: What do you think you bring to the band?
BR: Everything!.. lol The question should be what DON’T I bring to the band! ;)
